Hm, I'm starting to miss the teenage kicks of One Thing or Live While We're Young. Again, it's pleasantly diverting and the chorus is lovely, but it's not a million miles away from Story Of My Life. More shuffling acoustic guitars and Mumford-style padded drums (probably played by someone sat on one of those boxes every 'authentic' band seems to be in love with now). “I wanna see the way you move for me baby” the 'boys' drawl on the chorus to this properly 80s rock behemoth, which opens with a big crunching guitar riff and then morphs into something Def Leppard might have rejected for being a bit much. There are some big echo-y drum claps, lots of “aaawhoo” bits and it all trundles along quite pleasantly. Blimey.Īpparently this was co-written by One Republic's Ryan Tedder, who knows a thing or two about creating amazing pop songs (Halo, Bleeding Love etc), and it sounds like it actually. There's a slightly odd lyric in the second verse that runs, “if he feels my traces in your hair”. It's got those Lumineers' “hey” bits that everyone seems to be copying, and there's another whiff of folk-rock in the chorus. This isn't about a quick fumble, more a recently announced engagement. Again, it's upbeat but quite 'mature', and certainly less teenage than What Makes Your Beautiful. I don't think it's about nautical bondage mind you, but more about love and feeling safe with someone that's your soulmate etc etc and so on. “My hands, your hands tied up like two ships” sings Zayn to open Strong. Will likely be a lighter-strewn highlight of their forthcoming stadium world tour.
The anthemic (aren't they all?), McFly-co-write Don't Forget Where You Belong is another 'we're busy being popstars which can be a bit of a challenge at times but we try and stay grounded' songs, that has a really amazing chorus. Verdict: 3/5 Don't Forget Where You Belong “Not even the Gods above could separate the two of us” runs the chorus, which all gets very Epic by the song's end. Not a cover of the Lady Gaga 'classic', this is a delicate, acoustic guitar-lead ballad that sounds very 'adult', i.e. The chorus sounds like Def Leppard's Pour Some Sugar On Me. Opening with Harry slurring “Straight off the plane to a new hotel”, the album's title track is One Direction's ode to life on tour, all over-crowded Addison Lees (the glamour!) and being old enough to get pissed.
big stomping beat, polite guitars and a sky-scraping chorus that crashes in with all the subtlety of an anvil falling on an egg. It's fairly standard One Direction fodder, i.e. Just ignore the oddly terrifying, Madame Tussauds-inspired video.ĭiana – which I don't think is about England's rose - leaked last month in some form or another. The album's second single carries the faint whiff of Mumford & Sons but has such a lovely, lilting melody that it's pretty undeniable. The album's first single, it's basically a riddle wrapped up in an enigma – just what is the best song ever they're banging on about? My guess is it's all a bit meta and the Best Song Ever is actually about the Best Song Ever.
